Rajasthan Budget 2025: Major Push to Tackle Drinking Water Crisis with 1000 Tube Wells & 1500 Hand Pumps

Rajasthan's Finance Minister Diya Kumari presented Budget for 2025-26.
In a significant move to combat Rajasthan’s recurring drinking water crisis, especially during peak summer months, the state government has announced a major initiative under the Rajasthan Budget 2025. State Finance Minister Diya Kumari revealed plans to install 1000 tube wells and 1500 hand pumps across water-scarce regions next year.
The announcement comes as Rajasthan continues to battle acute water shortages, with several districts facing severe depletion of groundwater levels. The government aims to address this issue by enhancing access to potable water in rural and semi-urban areas.
Technical Workforce to Support Water Supply Infrastructure
Recognizing the need for proper maintenance of the newly installed water sources, the state will also establish a contract cadre of technical staff. This specialized team will oversee the installation, operation, and maintenance of the tube wells and hand pumps, ensuring sustainable access to clean drinking water.
A Step Towards Water Security
With Rajasthan being one of the driest states in India, the government has been focusing on long-term water conservation efforts. Experts believe this initiative could provide immediate relief to thousands of residents facing water scarcity.
Previous Water Conservation Efforts
Over the years, Rajasthan has undertaken multiple projects, including:
- Jal Jeevan Mission: Aiming to provide functional tap water connections to rural households.
- Mukhyamantri Jal Swavlamban Abhiyan: Focused on rainwater harvesting and watershed development.
While these initiatives have yielded some success, the groundwater table continues to decline in several districts, making tube wells and hand pumps an essential short-term measure.
The government is expected to roll out the project by early 2026, prioritizing the most water-stressed regions like Jaisalmer, Barmer, Bikaner, and Nagaur. Additionally, discussions are underway to augment groundwater recharge programs alongside these measures to ensure long-term sustainability.
The Rajasthan Budget 2025 has placed a strong emphasis on water security, rural development, and infrastructure, highlighting the government’s commitment to tackling one of the state’s most pressing issues.
