Lokpal Foundation Day Commemoration Marks Milestones in India’s Fight Against Corruption

The Foundation Day of the Lokpal of India was celebrated for the first time on 16th January 2024 at the Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi, marking a significant milestone in the country’s ongoing battle against corruption. The event, attended by Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Chief Justice of India, highlighted the achievements and future vision of the Lokpal since its establishment in 2014.

The occasion was graced by distinguished dignitaries including Justice N. Santosh Hegde, former Supreme Court Judge and former Lokayukta of Karnataka, and Padma Bhushan Anna Hazare, who joined virtually. The event also saw participation from several legal and judicial luminaries, including R. Venkataramani, Attorney General of India, and various judges, Lokayukta officials, and representatives from key institutions like the CBI and CVC.

In his address, Justice A.M. Khanwilkar, Chairperson of the Lokpal, reiterated that the establishment of the Lokpal was a pivotal moment resulting from a transformative civil society movement demanding an independent body to tackle corruption. Justice Khanwilkar stressed that the Lokpal was not just a symbol of democratic values, but a crucial instrument in eliminating corruption from public offices.

Highlighting the evolving nature of corruption, Justice Khanwilkar spoke of the strategies being developed to strengthen the Lokpal, including simplifying complaint processes, integrating cutting-edge technologies, and enhancing cooperation with agencies like the CBI, CVC, and the Judiciary. He also emphasized the importance of a well-informed citizenry and a more accessible Lokpal, which would help in building trust in the institution.

The Chief Justice of India, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, also delivered an insightful address on the role of the Lokpal, underscoring its critical function in upholding accountability and transparency within the government. He stressed that public trust in democratic systems is fundamental for good governance, noting that corruption erodes this trust and undermines fairness in resource allocation.

The event also included the felicitation of key figures like Justice N. Santosh Hegde and Shri R.Venkataramani, for their significant contributions to the cause of combating corruption. Padma Bhushan Anna Hazare was also honored, recognizing his leadership in the anti-corruption movement that culminated in the creation of the Lokpal.

The day’s proceedings included the screening of a video documentary showcasing the journey of the Lokpal, highlighting its milestones and envisioning the way forward in strengthening its impact. The occasion marked not only a reflection on the progress made but also a reaffirmation of the collective commitment towards a corruption-free India.
