The world-renowned Maru Mahotsav, also known as the Jaisalmer Desert Festival, commenced on Sunday, February 9, 2025, in the historic city of Pokhran. The festival began at 9:00 am with an Aarti at the revered Nepaleshwar Mahadev Temple, followed by a grand procession from Pokhran Fort to the grounds of Government Higher Secondary School, traversing the city’s main thoroughfares. The procession set the stage for a series of vibrant cultural programs, reflecting the rich heritage of Rajasthan.

The inaugural day’s events included cultural performances by local folk artists, along with the ‘Mr. Pokhran’ and ‘Miss Pokhran’ competitions. Innovative additions this year featured various rural sports competitions such as tug of war, rural wrestling, matka race, and musical chairs, with prizes awarded to the winners. In the evening, renowned Rajasthani singer Chuge Khan, along with celebrities Manisha Sharma and D. Naveen, captivated the audience with their performances. Organizers ensured proper seating arrangements for all tourists attending the festival.

On the second day, festivities commenced with the Mangala Aarti at the Shri Laxminath ji Temple, considered the Nagar Seth of the people. A grand procession from Gadsisar Sarovar to Shaheed Poonam Singh Stadium featured decorated camels from the Border Security Force, which were a special attraction. The stadium hosted various competitions, including ‘Mr. Desert’, ‘Miss Moomal’, safa-tying, and a moustache competition. An Art and Craft Bazaar was inaugurated, showcasing puppetry, magic shows, and performances by folk artists. Evening programs featured renowned artist Kutle Khan and internationally acclaimed singer Jyoti Noora, who enthralled the audience with folk songs and bhajans.

The third day highlighted cultural presentations and camel-related events at the Dedansar ground. The Border Security Force’s camel tattoo show was a major attraction. Rural sports competitions, including tug of war, Panihari Matka race, and gymnastics shows, were organized alongside camel decoration and ‘Shaan-e-Marudhara’ competitions. A camel polo match added to the excitement. At Shaheed Poonam Singh Stadium, a gathering of Rajasthani folk music and dance featured Annu presenting the Ghootna Chakri dance.

The four-day Maru Mahotsav concluded on Wednesday with a cultural program in the desert dunes of Sam-Lakhamna. Renowned Rajasthani folk artists and the celebrity Kabir Band delivered brilliant performances. The program began with Bhangur Khan and Party, followed by internationally renowned algoja player Tagaram Bhil, who mesmerized the audience with his folk musical instruments. The final evening was dedicated to the Kabir Cafe Band, leaving attendees with lasting memories of Rajasthan’s rich cultural tapestry.

The Maru Mahotsav, celebrated annually in February, is a vibrant cultural event that transforms the golden sands of Jaisalmer into a colorful extravaganza. The festival showcases traditional Rajasthani folk music and dance performances, including the mesmerizing Ghoomar and Kalbeliya dances. Highlights include camel parades, turban-tying contests, moustache competitions, and camel races. The event concludes with a breathtaking display of fireworks, lighting up the desert sky.
