India Achieves Milestone with SpaDeX Mission: Successful Spacecraft Docking Demonstrated

Launched on December 30, 2024, at 10:00 PM IST (16:30 UTC) from the First Launch Pad of the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, the SpaDeX mission utilized the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-CA C60) to deploy two small spacecraft into a 470 km circular orbit at a 55° inclination. Each spacecraft, designated SDX01 (Chaser) and SDX02 (Target), weighed approximately 220 kg. The mission’s primary objective was to develop and demonstrate technology for the rendezvous, docking, and undocking of these spacecraft in low-Earth orbit.

Docking Achievement

Following deployment, the Chaser spacecraft (SDX01) initiated a series of precision maneuvers to approach the Target spacecraft (SDX02). Utilizing a V-bar approach strategy, the Chaser successfully docked with the Target, marking a historic milestone for India’s space program.
